Chapter 45      Chapter 47

Psyche had been true to her word. She had let Eros take charge of their home and she had accepted it.

She didn’t let fear or doubt get in the way.

He could have forced his will on hers, forced the elements to be what he wished.

But this was so much better. Creating the world for her had been quite delightful.

She is accepting what we can be, the elements said.

The elements were lucky. They understood her while he had to struggle with cruder methods. True, the elements were happy letting her do whatever she wanted while he wanted to push her to greater heights.

“How did you like it?” he asked. The sun had finally set and he could talk to her.

She smiled.

She was so beautiful when she smiled.

“Words can’t even describe,” Psyche said.

She seemed happy. He couldn’t help walking over to her and hinting at an embrace. She leaned into him and he brought his arms around her.

He felt so happy.

“Thank you,” she said quietly. “I never would have imagined such a place.”

He was eager to know everything.

“Tell me more,” he said, leading her to a seat where they could sit together.

She recounted her day and shared what she liked the most.

He explained how she had helped too, how she had contributed to parts and pieces of it.

He was especially surprised with how much she loved the weeds and insects.

“I have always felt as if such creatures were greatly misunderstood,” she said, sounding delighted. “I’m glad they were included.”

He couldn’t quite understand their significance. He found no particular problem with what she called “weeds”, but there were some plants he preferred over others.

“Are there the same troubles here as in my world?” she asked. “The crowding of weeds, the biting of insects? I noticed with the cottage, the night air was free of any disturbances.”

“It’s more harmonious here,” Eros said, hoping she’d understand. “Everything gets its fill and finds peace and harmony with each other. At least, that’s how the world is as you create it.

“Even as I created this world before you came, I wouldn’t have included some of the things you do, but I like it. I like that sense of harmony and love even the less, um, attractive creatures.”

“I love it,” she said. “But what if there are times when I want the cottage. Can I ever go back?”

“Of course,” he said. “You are a co-creator of our world together. If, for a reason I can’t quite yet fathom, you would want to return to the cottage, you could. It is always there in your mind, ready to be realized.”

“Wow. How is there so much power here? What is this place?” she said.

There was only so much he could tell her.

“It’s a different realm, a realm where I belong. And now that you’re here, you belong too,” he said.

“Are there any others who live here?” she asked.

“Well, yes, there are many others,” he said.

“Could I meet them?” she asked.

Eros’s heart fell. He would always fail her in this one thing.

“Well, no,” he said.

“Why?” she said.

“It’s the only way –” he started.

“– we can be together,” she finished. “But why? Why are these the only conditions in which we can be together? I don’t understand.”

“I wish I could explain it to you,” he said. “It isn’t the way I prefer it, but it’s the way it must be.”

He really wished he could offer her more.

“I was thinking,” she said. “Maybe we could spend more time in the evenings together. Perhaps you could stay longer.”

He felt a thrill at the idea that she’d want to spend more time with him.

“You would like that?” he said.

“I want to get to know you better. You seem to know so much about me, I want to learn more about you,” she said.

He ached to tell her everything, ached to truly love her.

“That would be nice,” he said. “I want you to get to know me, Psyche. I wish you could know everything.”

She put her hand on his chest and kissed him.

He wanted her so much, wished so much to love her as freely as he felt. He had held back his power for as long as he could, but he couldn’t hold it back any longer.

He hoped she wouldn’t mind.
