Gaia Chapter 13

Chapter 12     Chapter 14

Ouranos stepped back and observed the thing he and Gaia had created. He had wanted so much to provide for her, to protect her from the cycle of creation that would eventually destroy her. He didn’t just need her. He wanted her to be safe.

“Kronos,” Ouranos said, observing the new figure standing before them.

“You have named one of our children,” Gaia said, surprised.

He looked down at her. She was so beautiful. He had missed her. He had missed creating with her. He felt a sudden desire to be with her again, day and night. This time, he didn’t mind if the others were around. He didn’t need to worry anymore.

Now they had Kronos.

“I am sorry I left you to manage the children alone,” he said. “We should manage them together.”

“I would like that,” she said.

“What should I do?” Kronos asked, feeling a bit awkward as Gaia and Ouranos continued to gaze at each other.

“Go explore,” Ouranos said. “Discover your powers.”

“We should introduce him to the other children,” Gaia said.

“He can find them on his own.”

“We should help him.”

“He can manage.”

“He has only just become. He needs our help.”

“I will find my way,” Kronos said.

“See,” Ouranos said once Kronos had gone. “He can manage on his own.”

“You assume so much about our children, yet you have spent almost no time among them,” Gaia said, starting to pull away. “You speak as though you know everything, but you do not.”

Why was Gaia getting annoyed?

“I may not know everything, but I believe Kronos will better discover what he is built for if he is allowed to explore.”

“That is not the only way,” Gaia said, starting to look for where Kronos had gone. “He needs guidance. He needs us who know more to help him discover what we have made him for.”

“But you were just saying that you did not know.  How can you trust that you will know how to guide Kronos?”

Gaia stopped and frowned. “You do not know the children like I do.”

“This is true. You know them more. Maybe it is my not knowing that is needed,” he said.

“How will not knowing help?? That does not have logic.”

Now she was clearly upset. Ouranos tried to think.

“Then maybe you can help me get to know our children,” he said.

She smiled up at him. He was relieved he had finally said the right thing.

“You will like them,” she said. “You will be so proud of what we have made.”

Ouranos followed as Gaia moved around the earth. She was eager for him to meet everyone. Kronos and his purpose could wait.

They found Okeanos first, who was pushing his water through a small crack between the rocks. He explained how he had noticed that the more the water flowed through the crack, the bigger the crack became. Ouranos tried to look interested. He wasn’t sure if it worked.

Next they found Tethys and Rheia examining a new growth of slime on some of Gaia’s rocks. Gaia immediately started talking with them and Ouranos waited patiently until they were done.

They hurried through Koios, Phoebe, Iapetos, and Themis who were engaged in a conversation neither Gaia nor Ouranos understood.

Ouranos perked up when they found Krios, Hyperion, and Theia who were working with concentrated pieces of light. They played with it, noticing how it changed as it passed through different materials.

They ended with Kronos and Mnemosyne. She was going over basic words and vocabulary to help Kronos acquaint himself with his new surroundings. Gaia noted that Ouranos had been right to let this newest addition explore on his own.

“Are you not pleased?” Gaia said as they finished.

“Very pleased,” he said. “I feel better knowing that our children have interests. These interests can become an understanding of their purpose.”

Ouranos felt especially interested in seeing what Kronos would do. Gaia wanted to show Kronos what to do. Gaia wanted to treat him like the others. But Ouranos felt certain he would not be like the others. It was why he’d allowed himself to create one more. It was why Ouranos could finally allow himself to get to know the others — their children.

Kronos was the answer.

Kronos would keep them all balanced.

Kronos just needed to understand his purpose.
